Saving the earth, one straw at a time

Our Story

We come from a small family of farmers with a long history of an agricultural way of life in Vietnam, which has been passed down from generation to generation.  On this land, there is an abundance of fresh grass known as Lepironia articulata (or Grey Sedge) that is grown due to the warm and humid climate and the plentiful fresh water that fills the soil of the Mekong Delta.
The Grey Sedge used to be harvested in order to make a variety of hand-crafted items including hats, sleeping mats, baskets and bags. However, with its hollow stem, it is naturally straw shaped, making it an ideal natural sipping tool!  In fact, to cool down after a long and hot day’s work in the summer heat of Vietnam, farmers would often break off grass straws and use them to enjoy their beverages for a nice little break.

This idea for use, along with our strong desire to preserve the natural environment and protect the animals of the beautiful Long An Province has driven us to create a solution to help the community, one straw at a time.  As pollution continues to destroy the beautiful habitat around us through increasing plastic that is now prevalent in the land, we want to come up with a way to help preserve the hard-working way of life of the farmers of Vietnam and the beauty of the land we grew up in.

How they are made ?

Our process of making both the fresh and dried grass straws includes harvesting, washing, and then cutting them in to various straw-sized tubes for use.  The insides are cleaned and go through one final washing before being packed to be shipped off.

While the fresh straws are intended for more immediate use (and can last up to two weeks in the fridge, if stored properly), the dried grass straws offer a more convenient and long-term storage solution.

The dried grass straws go through additional steps of drying and being baked in an oven which dries them out and allows them to be stored for up to 6 months at room temperature. Both types of straws are so safe you or your pet can chew on them if you get nippy!  They are 100% natural, eco-friendly, biodegradable, free of chemicals, preservatives and additives.

Our Goal

With over 2 million straws produced to date, our goal is to help clean up the environment and preserve the nature and wildlife in our beautiful home province of Long An and the Mekong Delta.  As well, we hope to help continue to give Vietnamese farmers an opportunity to continue the long-standing tradition of a simple, but proud way of life.

“Every action, however small, is a step forward towards  helping preserve the Earth.”
